Studying in a study group is a great way to prepare for a test or exam. There are ways to insure a study group is successful or unsuccessful.

Plan on a time that works for the majority of the group. Some people study best in the early morning, some early evening, and some late evening. It is important to study with people that have the same study habits for optimal results.

It is best to comprise a study group of people studying the same subject and not friends. Friends tend to play catch up and get minimal studying done. People who are casual acquaintances and do not know each very well are great candidates to be in a study group together because they don’t have a lot to say to each other. More studying gets done which is the point of having a study group.

Food is great to have at study groups, just not too much food. Light snacking is great for keeping up energy but heavy snacking can make people sluggish. Too much food can make people tired and ready for bed instead of ready to study. One person can be in charge of the snacks or it can be a group effort. Water, raisins, apples, oranges and peanut butter are great study group snacks. Sugary sodas should be avoided and so should energy drinks.

Study groups do not have to be boring question and answer groups. There are many fun ways to study. Flash cards work well for some people. Study groups can even jazz up their sessions by having someone be in charge of a weekly game. Versions of Jeopardy, Trivial Pursuit or charades can be made into fun study games.

Study groups can be a great way to study and improve overall grades.

When students perform poorly at school it is frustrating for the parents, the teacher and the student. It is important to try to get to the root of the problem and find a solution that can help the student achieve their best.

Significant events in the student’s life should be considered. If any major change has occurred such as a divorce, move, loss of a family member or any kind of trauma can cause difficulty paying attention. Bullying at school can also cause poor performance. Some children may need a small break from school and start their homework at a different, time such as after supper. Lifestyle changes should be made if needed to help the student t perform better.

If major changes are dealt with and lifestyle changes are made with no results, it is time to look at a different aspect of a student doing poorly. Formal testing may need to be done to ascertain if the student may have a learning disability. There are many different types of learning disabilities. The school should provide the testing needed to evaluate if the student has a learning disability. In some cases, the school will recommend the family obtain further testing through their family physician. The younger a disability is diagnosed the better the outcome for the child.
